Caroline Wozniacki picks Serena Williams for Istanbul conquest – Tennis News
Former world number one, Caroline Wozniacki, has chosen her favourite player for the Women Tennis Association Masters Championships conducted at Istanbul. She has picked up none other than the lady in-form, Serena Williams, who
is eyeing to bag her 46th career title in Turkey. The stage is set and players are decided. Williams is the third seed in the contest behind the top ranked Victoria Azarenka of Belarus and world number two Maria Sharapova.
The 22-year-old Dane said, “Serena is definitely a favourite always, indoors she's serving well and she has good shots.” It was the press conference that was conducted after the grand finale of the Kremlin Cup that was clinched
by Wozniacki who ousted the top seed Aussie superstar, Samantha Stosur, in an enthralling three-setter.
She was disappointed for not making it to the year-end finale and stated, “Obviously you want to be playing in Istanbul; no doubt that's the goal at the beginning of the season. But that didn't happen this year and that's just
something that is sports sometimes. I'm going to go to Sofia and just do my best.” However, an emphatic record of 20 triumphs in 31 finals of her career clearly demonstrates her ability and talent to make it through to the next year’s Masters Event in Istanbul.
She wasn’t in a great run of form from the start of the season and Kremlin Cup glory was her first WTA Premier victory since the last year’s New Haven conquest. So, the Dane has been struggling to keep up the momentum but now that she is back in form, something
big is waiting for her.
On the other hand, her fellow finalist Samantha Stosur is the alternative player for Istanbul having ended as the ninth best player in the world. She stated, “As far as Istanbul goes, I'm going there tonight, so I have one day
to prepare and then if I have to play, then I'll be as ready as what I can be. Time will tell whether or not I get to play another match this year.” She might take place in the event if some of the top eight players withdraw due to an injury or any other issue.
