Caroline Wozniacki plonks Kiki Bertens in round two – Rogers Cup 2012
Former world number one, Caroline Wozniacki, ended the cameo of the 80th ranked Dutch qualifier, Kiki Bertens, in the second round of the Rogers Cup in Montreal with straight sets 7-5, 6-1 win taking an hour and 22 minutes.
The 22-year-old Dane commenced the match with a serve hold and so did her foe. However, the breakthrough was coming considering the proximity of the play of each opponent. The first one to take a lead in the set was the 20-year-old
Dutch who broke serve in the third game.
However, a quick reply from the eight ranked Dane superstar equalized the scores at 2-2. Moreover, a serve hold from Wozniacki helped her reinstate the authority in the match and push the scores further to 3-2 in her favour.
Another exchange of breakpoints kept the scores together as Bertens bagged in another serve hold in the eighth game to stay in line with her opponent. No breakthroughs were witnessed until the 11th game of the set.
It looked like the tie-breaker round will be enforced to separate the winner from the loser but the Dane showed her class and smashed three startling winners to break serve at love. She won the opening set and stamped her authority
in the match.
Bertens couldn’t handle the onslaught from the Dane in the second set. She lost two breakpoints on the trot that gifted a monumental lead of 4-0 to her rival. Moreover, she couldn’t create a single opportunity to break serve and
that was the worrying point for her.
Wozniacki was easily bagging her serve games and as she repeated the phenomenon for the fourth time, the scores moved on to 6-1 and she won the second set as well; putting an end to a marvellous run of the 20-year-old booming Dutch
starlet who will definitely learn a lot from this match-up.
Next up for the beauty queen of Denmark is the American experienced professional, Varvara Lepchenko, who registered an upset against the 12th seed Slovak superstar, Dominika Cibulkova, in the second round; posting straight
sets 6-4, 6-4 win. So, it will be an interesting pre-quarterfinal battle.
