Caroline Wozniacki progresses; Samantha Stosur exits from the AEGON International 2013 – Tennis News
Former world number one, Caroline Wozniacki, outshined local star, Laura Robson, in straight sets at the AEGON International 2013 on Wednesday. The former US Open champion, Samantha Stosur, saw the exit doors after bowing out to
Lucie Safarova from this grass court tournament taking place in Eastbourne, United Kingdom.
Seeded fifth in this Wimbledon warm-up event, Wozniacki recreated her old magic. After stealing the show in almost one and a half hour, the Dane improved to a 2-0 lifetime in head-to-head series against Robson and progressed into
the quarter-finals.
The Danish star commented in an on-court interview after stealing the show, "It was obviously on a much different surface this time around and Laura has a very powerful game. For me it was just important to serve well myself and
try to get as many returns in as deep as possible, and move her. I thought it was a very good match. I'm happy to be the winner of it."
Wozniacki swiftly slid her entire serves and got the breakthrough in the ninth game of the opening set, eventually sealing the opener by winning six games to four.
The 22-year-old maintained her intensity in the proceeding set. She got the coveted break in the opening game and jumped to a 2-0 lead. Apart from losing her edge in the fourth game, the Dane stayed focused. She cashed another
break chance in the second last game and clicked the set with a 6-4 win.
The Australian wild card entrant, Stosur, lost her serve twice to exit from this tournament with disappointment.
The delighted Czech commented in a post match presser, "I think I do so well against her because I'm a lefty and she prefers her forehand, so I can attack her backhand side well. Also I play aggressively and try to take her time
away."
Ranked 14th in the WTA Premier Rankings, Stosur drew the first blood in the sixth game and jumped to a 5-2 lead. However, she lost her edge in the ninth game and took the set to a tie-breaker. The Aussie trailed in it
and consequently endured a 6-7(5) loss.
The 29-year-old failed to find her rhythm in the following set. Stosur held her serves to level the scores at 3-3. However, she stepped off steam afterwards and registered a 3-6 defeat.
Safarova will square off against the American qualifier, Jamie Hampton, who trashed Taiwan’s Su-Wei Hsieh in straight sets to set-up this match.
