Caroline Wozniacki pulls a stunner against Serena Williams – Sony Ericsson Open 2012
The highly anticipated quarter-final clash between the two former world number one players brought out stunning results, as Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark manhandled the American powerhouse, Serena Williams, on Tuesday. The fourth
seed Dane outshined Serena in twin sets, 6-4, 6-4, to march into the semi-finals of the Sony Ericsson Open in an assertive manner.
A fierce battle between the two hard-hitting competitors was expected but it proved out to be a fairly one-sided matchup in the end. Wozniacki took one hour and 35 minutes to root out the 30-year-old American tennis icon in straight
sets. It was her 13th victory of the running WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) season and the first one against Serena. The 10th seed former world number one had won all the three prior battles against Wozniacki but couldn’t do much in
the contest on Tuesday, falling cheaply to the dismay of her home crowd in Miami, Florida.
Fourth seeded Wozniacki outshined her opponent in every segment of the game, stamping her authority over the belligerent American for the first time in their four meetings. Her 59 per cent precise serve earned her 28 out of 38
first serve points, while Serena closely followed her by securing 25 out of her 35 points. The fourth seed crafted a total of six break opportunities in the match and converted half of her chances en route to victory. Her-30-year-old opponent could register
merely one out of two break points to finish on the losing side in the end.
The action started early in the opener when Wozniacki drew first blood in the third game and held her serve to lead 3-1. The fourth seed Dane kept building pressure on Serena and held her lead until the conclusion of the first
set at 6-4.
A more competitive second set was witnessed, with the 10th seed fighting desperately to make a comeback in the match. She dropped her serve in the third and the fifth games in arrow to cause further damage to her position
in the match. She finally broke Wozniacki in the eighth game but it was way too late for Serena to force her way back in the competition. The fourth seed Dane served out of the match at 5-4, booking a place in the semi-final round of the Sony Ericsson Open
in style.
Wozniacki will take on the reigning world number two, Maria Sharapova of Russia, in the semi-final draw. The second seed Russian outclassed the Chinese number one, Li Na, 6-3, 6-0, in the quarter-final battle.
