Caroline Wozniacki receives a first round shock from Ksenia Pervak – Brisbane International 2013
Biggest upset of the day was witnessed at the hard courts of Brisbane when the 21-year-old Kazakh qualifier, Ksenia Pervak, outfoxed the former world number one, Caroline Wozniacki, in an enthralling three-setter. It is most disturbing
start for the 10th ranked Dane as she fell apart in a two hours and 48-minute marathon, losing the contest 6-2, 3-6, 6(1)-7.
The 103rd ranked Kazakh showed immense stamina and registered her first head-to-head victory against the Dane in their third face-off. She lost the opening set but featured in a world class fight back in the following
two sets that hammered her rival out of the competition.
Wozniacki started off in flying style. She formed a strong grip, courtesy to a serve hold and a breakpoint in the first two games. Both players traded breakpoints that kept the lead of the Dane intact. Moreover, the 22-year-old
Wozniacki eased to another serve hold that mounted a huge lead of 4-1 on her rival. Pervak failed to respond the hardcore showdown of her rival and lost another serve break in a process that ended the opening phase of the match.
It seemed like the Dane will just pull the second set victory in quick succession and advance to the round of 16 of the tournament with ease. However, the start to the second phase hinted something else. Pervak converted the breakpoint
in the first game and took a lead of 2-0 courtesy to a comfortable serve hold.
Wozniacki gusted her way back into the contest with a stunning winner down the line that brought the scores back on serves. However, she couldn’t keep up the momentum and lost the breakpoint in the following game that reinstated
the lead of the Kazakh. A hat-trick of breakpoint conversion witnessed a successful ending for the 21-year-old Kazakh who enforced the final set into action.
Both players started off in a nervy fashion and clasped two breakpoints in the final set. However, it wasn’t good enough to separate the two contestants, hence, a tie-break round was enforced which was comprehensively won by the
qualifier. Pervak will face Urszula Radwanska in round two.
