Caroline Wozniacki secures world number one spot at year-end – Tennis News
Reigning World No.1, Caroline Wozniacki, will hold on to the number one spot at year-end despite her loss at Istanbul. She will sustain this spot for the second successive year and become the ninth-longest serving number one by
achieving this landmark.
She is from a sporting family; her father, Piotr, was a professional soccer player for Poland and her mother, Anna, used to represent Polish national volleyball team. Her parents are delighted at her achievements and she is proud
of them as well.
Her reaction to this news was in the following words “It's amazing for me to finish the year as number one once more. I think people do realise the true importance of it. If you ask any little girl or any little boy, everyone will
know what it means to be number one. Maybe not everyone will understand what a Grand Slam is, because you have to be into tennis to know that. If you're number one it means you've done something remarkable”.
She was disappointed at her loss at the hands of Vera Zvonareva but is still hopeful to make a remarkable comeback and delight her fans with another title this year. Wozniacki spoke to the media after her loss from Zvonareva in
Istanbul tournament and proclaimed that she likes to play long matches and provides value for money to crowd.
The unfortunate exit of showstopper World No.2, Maria Sharapova, from the Istanbul tournament due to an ankle injury has confirmed the first place finish for Wozniacki at the year end. World No.2 is suffering from an ankle injury
and is reported to have said that the ankle is not yet completely healed that refrains me from giving 100% at the pitch; limits my movements.
Marion Bartoli will replace Maria Sharapova in the tournament.
Wozniacki has held on to the first spot for the past 54 weeks (non-consecutive) and won six WTA-leading singles titles this year. She became the first Danish woman to reach a grand slam singles final at the 2009 U.S. Open, where
she lost to Kim Clijsters.
She climbed to the top spot at WTA rankings last year when she defeated Petra Kvitova in the third round of the China Open in October. The Danish player lost her number one spot to Clijsters earlier this year for a short period
of time and that was the only time since last October that she hasn’t been number one.
21-year-old, Wozniacki, needs to win her next match against Petra Kvitova to keep her title hopes alive at Istanbul. It is going to be a very tough task but she is capable of making a miraculous comeback provided her class, technique,
rank and astonishing shot making ability.
