Caroline Wozniacki squeaks past Petra Martic to reach title-round – e-Boks Open 2012
Top seed, Caroline Wozniacki, got the better of the Croatian starlet, Petra Martic, in straight sets at the e-Boks Open 2012 on Saturday. She nudged up a 6-3, 6-2 victory against the 21-year-old to breeze into the final showdown at this WTA (Women’s Tennis
Association) International event held in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Wozniacki displayed top notch performance to oust the world number 57 in their third meeting. After outfoxing her rival in 68 minutes, the Dane not only improved to a 3-0 lifetime in the head-to-head series against Martic but also booked a spot in the final
round at this indoor hard court event.
"Petra played quite well. She's a very good player," the blooming Dane was quoted after her match. "I was just able to play better today. I also put more pressure on her by not giving away any easy points."
The former world number one recreated her magic at the Farum Arena and swiftly held her opening serve to love. Apart from failing to ward off the lone breakpoint she came across, Wozniacki capitalised on two out of three break opportunities and pocketed
the opener with a 6-3 win.
With the help of her home crowd, Wozniacki carried her momentum in the following set and smoothly plucked her entire serves without facing any obstacle. She cashed in both break opportunities and pulled out the set with a 6-2 score line.
"It's always nice to win at home but I don't think about it too much," Wozniacki commented about her home tournament. "I don't think it's easy for me here, because there are a lot of good players. I just seem to play very consistently here, which is when
I'm dangerous."
Currently ranked 6th in the WTA Premier Rankings, Wozniacki will square off against the second seed, Angelique Kerber, who crushed the former world number one, Jelena Jankovic, with a breadstick to set-up this epic encounter. The German ace took
full advantage of the six double faults Jankovic spilled and converted five out of 12 break opportunities to her advantage, consequently sealing the deal with a 6-2, 6-1 success in 78 minutes.
