Caroline Wozniacki starts with a bang with win over Elena Dementieva
The 20-year-old Danish star Caroline Wozniacki made quick work of no. 7 ranked Russian Elena Dementieva on Tuesday 27 October , winning in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-1, in their opening round match-up at the WTA Championships in Doha, Qatar.
After being named the number one seed and ranked number one on the WTA circuit, the pressure still hasn’t gotten to Wozniacki as she came out and won the first set in 26 minutes. During the first three games
of set one, Wozniacki was in complete control taking 12 of a possible 14 points off of Dementieva.
Dementieva was definitely out of form against the world’s number one, committing a large amount of unforced errors and double faults.
"I think the fact that I was not able to practice for a couple of days because I really needed to rest, it really affected the way I was moving today. I was going for the wrong shots
all the time. Usually it's not happening to me very often. But, yeah, I'm sure I will play better next match. Today was a bad experience. I'm going to learn from that and play a better match next round."
Throughout the first set and into the second set, Wozniacki was never really tested, as Dementieva could not come up with a response to her pin-point serves and well placed ground strokes. The second set
went much like the first with the Dane taking it to Russian and Dementieva finally succumbing to a straight sets loss.
For the number one ranked Wonziacki, her victory over Dementieva further supplants her as the one to beat in the world. In order to keep her at the top of the leader board, she will have to win one more
of her round robin match-ups, which will keep the surging Vera Zvonareva of Russia in the second ranked spot.
Zvonareva has come on strong recently as she finished as the runner-up in both the US Open and at historic Wimbledon. She also won her opening match-up at the WTA Championships over Serbian Jelena Jankovic,
6-3 and 6-0.
Up next for Wozniacki will be the number five-ranked Australian Samantha Stosur who is here for her very first time. Stosur also started off on the right foot as she won her opening match against Italy’s
Francesca Schiavone in straight sets. The Stosur and Wozniacki match will be played on Wednesday.
For Dementieva, she now has a hill to climb after losing to Wozniacki. She clearly did not look up to form, and will be looking to build on the positives of her match. Up next for Dementieva will be Stosur
and Schiavone on Thursday and Friday, respectively.
