Caroline Wozniacki steals the trophy under the nose of Samantha Stosur – Kremlin Cup 2012
Former world number one, Caroline Wozniacki, beats the 28-year-old Aussie superstar, Samantha Stosur, in an epic grand finale of the Kremlin Cup on Sunday. She won the opening set 6-2 but squandered an early lead of the second
set and lost it 4-6. However, she recovered well in the final set to inch ahead of her rival with the scores of 7-5.
It was an edge of the seat contest with everyone in the arena just amused to witness the level of hardship and stamina portrayed by both athletes. They didn’t face each other since 2010, so it was kind of something different and
new for both contenders. Previously, the head-to-head scores were in favour of the ninth ranked Aussie who led them 3-2 but this victory for the Dane has equalized them with three apiece.
While conducting an after-match press conference, Wozniacki commented, “I'm just happy I'm healthy, and I feel I've been hitting the ball well lately, so I'm just hoping to play well here this week. Everyone's quite tired at the
end of the season - I'm hoping to play well here, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't looking forward to some holidays."
Commenting about the final, the Dane said, “I think both of us played very good tennis out there. Sam has been playing well and I knew it wasn't going to be easy, and it could have gone either way at the end, but I think at the
right times I played the right shots.”
The first set witnessed a quick fire from the Dane that earned her lead of 3-1 courtesy to a breakpoint in the second game. Both players swapped breakpoints in the midst of the set that was coupled with another cameo from the 22-year-old
Dane who clinched a breakthrough in the final game to steal the opening set.
First six games of the second set witnessed a breakpoint on each end. A serve hold from both players pushed the scores further to 4-4. However, the Dane failed to hold serve while her opponent did in the following two games that
enforced the final set into play.
Stosur took a lead in the final set with an opening game breakthrough but couldn’t retain in the sixth game. Moreover, both players inched towards the tie-breaker round but an onslaught from the Dane in the 12th game
forced Stosur out of the contest. It was the maiden Premier Title for Wozniacki after her last year’s conquest at New Haven in August.
