Caroline Wozniacki stoops out to Qiang Wang in the opening round – BMW Malaysian Open 2013
A stunning outcome was witnessed in the opening round brawl of BMW Malaysian Open on Wednesday, as the former world number one, Caroline Wozniacki, suffered a cracking defeat in the first round of the tournament. The Chinese qualifier,
Qiang Wang, registered the upset victory against the top seeded Dane, settling the final score line at 2-6, 7-6(1), 6-1.
It is the biggest upset of the tournament so far, as the world number 10 falls out of the draw at the hands of 186th ranked underdog contender. No one expected Wang to pull out such a big victory against the reigning
world number 10 contestant but an overall display of high quality tennis took her to the finishing line in the end. The 21-year-old was extremely delighted on her first triumph over a top-tenner, whilst Wozniacki was left dejected after the match.
“I was feeling light-headed, but tried my best to keep playing” Wozniacki told after the match, as she has been suffering from heat illness prior to the contest, “I just didn’t have energy out there. It’s very disappointing to
lose, but that’s how it goes sometimes, and hopefully I can come back strong again.”
The top seeded Dane has a very good start to the contest. An exchange of break points was witnessed in the beginning but Wozniacki came up with two successive breakthroughs in the sixth and eighth games to wrap up the opener at
6-2.
It appeared as if the world number 10 will cruise through the following set comprehensively and send the Chinese underdog home. However, Wang came back very strongly in the second set and turned the tables on Wozniacki. She dropped
her serve twice in the set but retaliated with timely break points to recover very well. Wang managed to drag the set into a tie-break and eventually took the better of her superior ranked opponent at 7-6(1).
Wozniacki suddenly lost all her steam and the Chinese qualifier fully capitalized upon the opportunity. She held all her serves and broke the Dane’s serve in fourth and sixth games to register a bread stick, 6-1.
