Caroline Wozniacki submits to Angelique Kerber in round two - Porsche Tennis Grand Prix 2012
Former world number one, Caroline Wozniacki, faced another thrashing loss at the hands of the in-form German contestant, Angelique Kerber, in the second round of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix. It was a perfect opportunity for the
Dane to have her revenge of the earlier loss in Copenhagen but she failed to make any impact on the red clay courts of Stuttgart, Germany and lost the match 1-6, 2-6.
The sixth seed Dane was playing her match against the 14th ranked German having won the first two battles between the two players Stockholm 2008 and Copenhagen 2011. However, she squandered her lead at the home soil
of Kerber and the head-to-head scores were now tied at 2-2.
The match kicked off in traditional fashion; both players held their respective serves in the first three games. However having saved a couple of breakpoints in the opening serve game, the Dane lost the first breakthrough in the
fourth game and went down to a trail of 1-3.
Kerber was smashing her ground strokes with utmost command and looked in terrific touch. She grabbed another breakpoint in the sixth game that gave her an unassailable lead of 5-1 in the opening set. She just spared a couple of
rallies for the Dane before bagging the first set in quick succession.
Wozniacki started the second set miserably, dropped the opening two serve games and went down to a trail of 0-4. It was such a vulnerable performance from the sixth seed Dane who had made a strong statement after registering an
emphatic comeback in the previous encounter against the Serb former world number one, Jelena Jankovic.
No more breakpoints ended the match in favour of the German who sneaked a critical win to inch one step closer to her third title of the season. In a post-match interview, the German stated, “It was a very perfect match. Caroline
is a great player, a Top 10 player and No.1 in January, so to beat her twice in the last two weeks gives me a lot of confidence. It doesn't matter if I'm playing on hard or clay, I feel very good on both surfaces. And I feel very good here. The crowd is unbelievable."
Kerber will have another tough battle against the third seed Czech, Petra Kvitova, in the quarter-final of the tournament. However, if she manages to register yet another upset, she will be the hot favourite contestant to win the
title at her home soil.
