Caroline Wozniacki survives Su-Wei Hsieh’s onslaught in round two – China Open 2012
Former world number one, Caroline Wozniacki, bounced back a set down to trounce the 38th ranked Taiwanese, Su-Wei Hsieh, in the second round of the China Open at Beijing. She lost the opening set tie-breaker but took
revenge in the second phase and ended the final set with a quick fire. Final scores were 6(5)-7, 7-6(3), 6-0. It was a contest that lasted for two hours and 48 minutes; thoroughly entertained the spectators in the arena.
Wozniacki started the opening set at a great pace; almost sneaked a breakthrough in the opening game but a timely comeback from the 26-year-old Taiwanese didn’t allow her a lead. Both players swapped breakpoints before the Dane
took lead with another breakthrough.
World number 11, Wozniacki, couldn’t retain the lead until the end and lost the breakpoint in the eighth game of the match. Both players capitalized on their serves to enforce the tie-breaker into play. It was expected that the
former world number one will use her experience to power down the Taiwanese competitor but she fall victim to the onslaught of Hsieh and lost the first phase.
Hsieh took a resounding lead of 3-0 in the second set; broke serve twice in a row and didn’t allow the Dane to grab anything in the opening phase. However, the Dane managed to clasp two breakthroughs in succession and bounced back
with three successful games. No drama was witnessed in the rest of the proceedings of the set and the tie-breaker round was enforced for the second time into play. Wozniacki didn’t panic and snatched the triumph to extend the match further.
The final set was an absolute cracker from the Dane. She grabbed a breakthrough in the opening game and didn’t look back from that stage. Three breakpoints coupled with a hat-trick of serve holds helped the 22-year-old Dane to
register a bagel against the Taiwanese superstar.
Next up for the 10th seed Dane is the top ranked German superstar, Angelique Kerber, who took just a fraction over an hour to hammer the 20-year-old Spanish qualifier, Lara Arruabarrena-Vecino, in the second round of
the tournament.
