Caroline Wozniacki through to Rogers Cup final
Caroline Wozniacki has booked a place in the final of the Rogers Cup in Montreal, defeating Svetlana Kuznetsova in a rain-delayed semi-final.
The Dane, who is poised to enter the US Open as top seed following the withdrawal of world No. 1 Serena Williams, will now front up for the final later today as organisers seek to complete the tournament a day behind the scheduled date for the tournament’s conclusion.
Wozniacki, who had taken a 2-0 lead in the match when rain first halted play on Saturday, claimed victory over Kuznetsova 6-2, 6-3 in one hour and 21 minutes, securing what proved to be the decisive break in the second set in its eighth game before going on to confidently serve out the second set to claim victory over the Russian.
She’ll now play Wimbledon runner-up Vera Zvonareva (who was leading 7-6, 1-0 when Victiria Azarenka retired from their semi-final with a leg injury) in a final that’s due to begin at 1.30pm local time (6.30pm BST).
Looking ahead, the question now is whether Wozniacki’s back-to-back Monday matches will mean that, even with the 20-year-old’s penchant for a hectic schedule, she’ll head straight to the airport and on to New Haven for the Pilot Pen Tennis at Yale, where she’s seeded No. 1 ahead of Australia’s Sam Stosur, this week.
With three straight weeks of tournament play behind her, including winning the title in the inaugural Danish Open in Copenhagen earlier in August, Wozniacki may well be best served by spending the rest of this week on the practice courts as she prepares to go one better than her 2009 runner-up showing at the year’s final Grand Slam.
Should Wozniacki elect not to play at New Haven in the week leading up to the US Open it would be another blow to organisers, who late late week received news from wildcard Ana Ivanovic that an ankle injury she suffered in Cincinnati would sideline her from the event.
