Caroline Wozniacki to play at the 2012 New Haven Open – Tennis News
Four-time champion, Caroline Wozniacki, has committed to this year’s New Haven Open, which will be held at the hard courts of Connecticut Tennis Centre from 17th to 25th August.
Currently at sixth spot in the WTA Singles Rankings, Wozniacki has never lost a match in New Haven, winning this event every time she has participated in the last four years. Playing as the top seed, she captured the title without
losing even a single set last year, beating Czech Republic’s Petra Cetkovska 6-4 6-1 in the final. Playing here for the first time in 2008, the Dane was an unseeded entrant but upset all of her higher ranked opponents on the road to title match. She came back
from one set down to stun the then world number 11, Anna Chakvetadze of Russia, 3-6 6-4 6-1 to win the crown.
Wozniacki said, in a press release, “I love playing the New Haven Open and being on the Yale campus, and am hopeful that I can continue my winning streak there this August. The fans in Connecticut have been amazing, and they make
the tournament feel like a home event for me.”
The Dane is tied with former world number one, Venus Williams of USA, by winning four career titles in New Haven. Williams also grabbed her four crowns consecutively from 1999 to 2002.
Tournament director of the New Haven Open, Anne Worcester, was relieved with Wozniacki’s announcement, as she was unsure due to the tight schedule in the Olympics year and the Danish’s good performance at the top level. Worcester
revealed she is worried every year if Wozniacki would return to the event or not.
She said, "In this Olympic year, I wasn't taking anybody for granted. I was definitely not sure if (Wozniacki) would come back and defend, but the fact she continues to return, even with her incredible success at the top of the
game, is a testament to the kind of player she is and the kind of person she is."
World number four, Agnieszka Radwanska, had already assured of her participation at the New Haven Open last week.
