Caroline Wozniacki topples Yanina Wickmayer to reach the quarters – Sony Ericsson Open 2012
Former world number one, Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark, waded off the early resistance posed by Yanina Wickmayer in the fourth round battle of the Sony Ericsson Open on Monday. The number four seed Dane took one hour and 36 minutes to wrap up victory in straight sets, 7-6(6), 6-0, to book a spot in the quarter-final draw of the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier-level event in Miami, Florida.
It was a gruelling battle in the early parts of the contest but once getting the opener in her bag, Wozniacki blasted her way through the second set to conclude victory with a bagel. She took time to get her eye in game and then outshined the Belgian in the second set, breaking her in every single serve game to cruise to victory with ease.
It was Wozniacki’s fifth straight victory over the 33rd ranked Wickmayer, giving her a 5-0 edge in the head-to-head scores. The Dane served with 67 per cent precision in the match and clinched 31 out of 45 first serve points en route to victory. She broke the Belgian serve five out of 12 times, while Wickmayer converted two out of four break points to finish on the losing side in the end.
"In the second set I just took off from the first point," Wozniacki said after registering her 12th victory of the running season. "The first set was a very high level from both of us. I wasn't able to take my chances at 6-5, but I'm happy I finished it in the tie-break. I was going for that ace."
Wozniacki will have to face the other former world number one, Serena Williams, who is making a comeback from an injury layoff. Seeded at number 10 in the tournament draw, Williams has been outstanding throughout her Miami voyage. She hasn’t dropped a set en route to the quarter-final and disposed of the sixth seed Aussie tennis ace, Samantha Stosur, in the fourth round to book a date with Wozniacki. The American tennis icon leads 3-0 against the fourth seed Wozniacki in their head-to-head series and is aiming to claim her first championship title of the year at the Sony Ericsson Open.
