Caroline Wozniacki tramples Francesca Schiavone in the semi-final of Brussels Ladies Open
Yet another amazing match from Caroline Wozniacki as she reached the final in an attempt to win her fourth title of the season. The 20-year-old Dane utilized her superb tennis skills to battle past 2010 French Open champion Francesca Schiavone 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 at the Royal Primrose tennis club on Friday.
The match opened with Schiavone racing and dismantling Wozniacki’s game to lead 4-1, which was a dominant position for the Italian number one. She continued to put up more fight against the feisty Dane but it was not enough as Wozniacki’s powerful ground strokes and power hitting of both wings brought her to match points. She continued to play dominantly and sealed the first set 6-4.
The 30-year-old Italian started the second set, using her prolific slice to good effect and as a consequence held her opening game with ease. In response, Wozniacki generated some excellent serving and shots as she went it on to hold the score at 4-4. What came next was totally unexpected; Schiavone broke the Dane’s serve with a brilliant forehand down the line and reeled off next two games in an attempt to tie the score one set apiece. Schiavone played some brilliant shots to the get the set and she totally deserved it.
The final set happened to be the most tightly contested. Wozniacki began the operation with a 2-0 lead, as Schiavone stacked up three unforced errors in the second game. And even though Schiavone bounced back right away, later, in the eighth game, Wozniacki gained a decisive break and went on to reach the Brussels Open final.
Schiavone’s unforced errors hindered her from being more dominant against her Dane opponent. Wozniacki kept her error count lower than that, with 25, which was way lower than Schiavone’s 52. Dane’s amazing fitness and ability once again proved to be one of her strongest assets. She blitzed third-seeded Roland Garros champion Schiavone, taking 153 minutes of play. Wozniacki is now 4-2 against Schiavone.
Wozniacki now moves on ahead to face Shuai Peng of China in the final of the Brussels Ladies Open on Saturday. Wozniacki and Peng will meet for the fourth time at the WTA level, with the Dane holding a 2-1 advantage over the Chinese. Peng put on a dazzling display of tennis to outlast world no.3 Vera Zvonareva 6-3, 6-3. She served brilliantly in the whole match, however, it was the unforced errors which the Russian committed in an order to give away the match to her opponent.
Both players have a chance to win the match, however one will have to give up. The Saturday’s winner will receive a cheque for US$ 618,000 and a Champions trophy.
