Caroline Wozniacki vs. Dominika Cibulkova – Fourth Round Preview: Wimbledon Championships 2011
World number one Caroline Wozniacki will be facing Slovakian tennis star Dominika Cibulkova in the fourth round of 2011 Wimbledon Tennis Championships in United Kingdom.
The two players have played each other on several occasions at the junior circuit and Women’s Tennis Association tour previously. A very competitive and tight encounter is expected as the contestants are fully aware of each other’s
strengths and weaknesses.
“We grew up playing against each other in the juniors,” Wozniacki said. “So we know each other pretty well. She’s a pretty short player. But taking the ball early, trying to be aggressive, returning well. It’s going to be a game
where I need to keep my serve up. I need to get a lot of balls back and try to take the initiative and make her run.”
Wozniacki made it to the fourth round with a stunning 6-3, 6-2 victory over Australian Jarmila Gajdosova. Earlier in the first and second rounds of the tournament, she crushed Arantxa Parra Santonja and Virginie Razzano respectively.
The Dane has been enjoying by far the best season of her career. With already 5 WTA titles to her name this year, she will looking to register her first ever Grand Slam triumph at Wimbledon this year.
Starting the year on a positive note, she reached the semi-final of Australian Open where she lost to Li Na. At Roland Garros, she made a strong start to her campaign but was stunned by Daniela Hantuchova in the third round. Her
best showing at the Wimbledon is fourth round appearance at the 2009 and 2010 editions of the tournament. The Dane will be certainly aiming higher this time around and considering her current form, she is one of the strong contenders for this title.
Cibulkova, on the other hand, had to work hard for a place in the last sixteen. She faced a tough challenge against Mirjana Lucic in her opening match at the championships. In the third round play, she had to raise the level of
her game to overcome the inform Julia Georges.
The Slovakian has given considerable results on the tour since the season has started but she is still chasing after her first WTA title. She reached the third round of Australian Open and then made a fourth round appearance at
Indian Wells. However injuries have forced her out of the game for good part of the season.
Wozniacki leads the head-to-head record between the two players 6-2. The pair’s last meeting was recorded in the third round of Aussie Open, when Wozniacki earned a straight sets victory. Cibulkova has defeated Wozniacki earlier
this year at Sydney and she certainly has the game to upset the Dane.
