Caroline Wozniacki whacks out Su-Wei Hsieh in the Round Rubber clash – Tournament of Champions 2012
World number 11, Caroline Wozniacki, wasted little time in ousting the 26-year-old Taiwanese star, Su-Wei Hsieh, in the Rubber Round clash at Sofia. She registered an emphatic 6-2, 6-2 score line taking fraction over an hour at
the indoor hard courts of Bulgaria. She is the top seed contestant in the Tournament of Champions and eyeing a comeback into the Top-10 category by reaching the final of the tournament without losing any match or winning the title.
Former world number one commented in a post-match interview, “I was just trying to do my best, and obviously you always want to win in two sets. I'll just do my best in my next matches too. It's going to be tough - Roberta changes
the rhythm up a lot. I'll have to be prepared for that - it's going to be a tough one tomorrow.”
The 27th ranked Taiwanese couldn’t handle the onslaught of her rival at all. She was unable to pierce through the game style of the 22-year-old Dane and find an opening to exploit. In the previous two meetings, Wozniacki
had defeated Hsieh so it was statically impossible for the 27th ranked Taiwanese to outfox the Dane.
However, there clash in the China Open at Beijing was a fantastic three-setter where Wozniacki rallied a set down to register a win. Hence, the revenge mission was possible in sight but not achieved on Tuesday. In the opening set,
Wozniacki broke her rival’s serve on two different occurrences to take a resounding lead of 5-2 and served out the set with a commanding serve hold. She looked focused; smashed an ace and committed no double-fault throughout the opening phase.
In the second set, the Dane top seed grabbed a breakthrough in the first and fourth game to post an unassailable lead of 4-1. She was forced to drop a breakpoint in the following game but bounced back with a breakthrough to make
it 5-2. She served out the set as well as the match with utmost ease and marched on with a successful start in Bulgaria.
Two other winners from the day were the Italian superstar, Roberta Vinci, and the local hot-favourite Tsvetana Pironkova. Vinci took out and Daniela Hantuchova whilst the Bulgarian number one jolted the superior ranked Jie Zheng
in an epic three-setter.
On the second day, Caroline Wozniacki will take on Roberta Vinci; Tsvetana Pironkova will lock horns with Maria Kirilenko while Jie Zheng will look to outmuscle Nadia Petrova to wipe the grief of first day loss.
