Caroline Wozniacki will compete in the Rogers Cup next season – Tennis News
World number one, Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark, has committed to lead the line-up at the Rogers Cup next year. The prestigious WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) event will be held from 4th to 13th of August next season at the Uniprix Stadium in Montreal, Canada.
The Rogers Cup will be returning to Montreal next year , as the event was held in Toronto this season. The top ranked Dane bagged the Premier level event in Montreal in 2010 edition, defeating the then 11th ranked Russian, Vera Zvonareva, in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. Wozniacki suffered a humiliating defeat in this year’s Rogers Cup when she was dumped in the second round by then 22nd ranked Italian Roberta Vinci, on the hard courts of Toronto.
The world number one hopes of repeating her feat of 2010 at the Premier-level event next year and hope of recapturing the prestigious title. Wozniacki finished the current WTA season with a 63-17 winning record and six WTA singles championship titles to her name. The Dane has extended her title count to 18 but is yet to bag her maiden Grand Slam trophy so far.
Wozniacki will be joined by the reigning world number three, Victoria Azarenka, of Belarus at the star-studded field at Montreal next summer. The Belarusian is currently holding her career best ranking of world number three and finished a brilliant WTA season with 55-17 winning record to her name. Azarenka bagged three singles and two doubles championship titles in the current year but like Wozniacki, the Belarusian is also having a Grand Slam title drought in her career despite being in the Top-3.
Azarenka had a brilliant run at the 2011 Rogers Cup in Toronto and made it to the semi-finals of the event before losing to the former world number one, Serena Williams, in straight sets, 3-6, 3-6. Her presence in Montreal next season will make the field even enthralling one and she will be stepping on the courts as one of the hot favourites for the title.
The third tennis star to announce her confirmation at the Rogers Cup was France’s Marion Bartoli. The world number nine cited last week that she will be a part of the prestigious tournament and will like to take the title to her name in the end. She was eliminated in the opening round of the Rogers Cup this year, losing to 135th ranked Galina Voskoboeva of Kazakhstan in straight sets, 3-6, 3-6.
