Caroline Wozniacki will take on Klara Zakopalova in the quarter-finals – KDB Korea Open 2012
Top seed Caroline Wozniacki will face off the Czech star, Klara Zakopalova, in the quarter-finals at the KDB Korea Open Tennis Championship 2012, a WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) International event taking place in Seoul, South Korea. The Danish ace recorded
a 6-2, 6-3 victory against Caroline Garcia while Zakopalova crippled her opponent, Magdalena Rybarikova, with a breadstick to set up this clash.
The former world number one, Wozniacki is coming off from opening round exit (lost to Irina Begu) at the US Open, last of the four Grand Slam events held in Queens, New York City. She is struggling to find her lost rhythm and bidding for her maiden career
title this season. The Dane managed to make a final showdown at the e-Boks Sony Ericsson Open in Copenhagen but bowed out to second seeded Angelique Kerber.
Currently ranked 11th in the WTA Premier Rankings, Wozniacki seems to found her lost momentum at the Seoul Olympic Park Tennis Center. She crushed the Dutch challenger, Arantxa Rus, with a breadstick in her opening match. The Dane then required
one hour and eight minutes triumphing over the French qualifier and setting up a date with Zakopalova.
Wozniacki lost her serve once but capitalised on four out of five break opportunities to record this success. She also fired four ferocious aces and clobbered a fascinating first serve share of 72 per cent.
The world number 27 on the other hand snapped out from a five match losing streak after trashing Spain’s Garbine Muguruza in the opening round of this event. After recording her first win since quarter-final berth at the Bastad WTA International event in
July, Zakopalova gained confidence and moved a step closer towards her third career title.
The 30-year-old made quick in-roads in her second round match against the Slovakian starlet. She swiftly pocketed the breadstick in the opening set. Zakopalova stayed calm in the following set and after prevailing in the tie-breaker, she pulled out the victory
with a 6-1, 7-6(6) score line in one hour and 22 minutes. The Czech spilled more unforced errors but produced an acceptably first serve share of 56 per cent. She also impressively cashed in all five break chances and sealed the match with 70 points.
Both stars are facing each other for the third time with the Danish number one leading 2-0 in the head-to-head series against Zakopalova. Wozniacki last conquered the Czech at the Copenhagen WTA event two years ago where she capitalised on three out of four
break chances to formulate a 6-2, 7-6(5) success. The Dane also produced a better first serve share of 74 per cent and brilliantly availed 38 out of 51 points on it.
Looking at her current run of form, Wozniacki needs to practice harder in order to outfox the veteran. However, the Dane is expected to formulate a 6-4, 7-5 score line over Zakopalova and will most probably end her title drought at this outdoor hard court
event.
