Caroline of Brunswick , Princess of Wales 1795, half penny coin?

why was a coin produced with the head of Caroline Princess of Wales on it while George 111 was still King - this was before the Regency - does anyone have one similar - we have a half penny?

  1. It looks to me that you have mixed up your Georges.

    George 3 was married to Queen Charlotte. He died in1820 and was succeeded by his son the prince of Wales who was married to Caroline of Brunswick.

    Their marriage was a huge disaster George refused to have her crowned and banned her from the coronation ceremony this makes your coin interesting!


  2. What you have is not technically a coin, but a "token". In 18th century Britain there was often a shortage of genuine official coinage, so many traders, large employers and local authorities produced tokens of a stated value which were generally accepted and circulated instead of the national coinage. Because they weren't official, the producers of these tokens could put any design they fancied on them - their own logo, some local landmark, whatever. As Caroline of Brunswick married the Prince of Wales in 1795, this looks like a "royal wedding commemorative" design.
