Question:

Carpet or Laminate in a child's bedroom?

Which should I choose? I have two small children, and I need to put flooring in their new rooms. Having carpet installed or installing laminate ourselves will cost the same, though I would have to buy area rugs to cover the carpet.

Cost aside (except that we will have a rental grade carpet if we go with carpet), which would you choose and why?

Thanks!!

  1. Watch the carpet you choose ESPECIALLY if you will become pg or have a newborn in the house - there are horrible chemicals in some artificial fabrics that are causing miscarriages or problems with infant breathing.  I would get flooring because it's cleaner (carpets have all that dust and funk in them).

  2. I would go with carpet because it's nicer for a bed room laminate is typically for kitchens or bathrooms not for bed rooms and think about this your babies aren't going to be small for ever when they are teenagers you are going to have to change the floors again. and you don't have to get rugs to go on top of your carpet that's just extra money just get a carpet cleaner for spills. now if you wanted to go with something easier to clean up then go with wood floors

  3. Laminate.  It is more durable, you don't have to worry about stains and resale is better.  All it takes is one night of the stomach flu to ruin carpet!!!  I would buy some area rugs just to warm up the room, but definately go with laminate!!

  4. laminate, easier to clean and should last longer then carpet (no stains), just make a rule of no drink in the bedrooms- the laminate will get ruined from moisture. Good luck!

  5. Yeah, this is great advice coming from a dyed in the wool bachelor.

But one that has to clean his own messes.

I would go for the laminate, as they are so much easier to clean.

You will be getting area rugs anyway, so that should present no extra cost., Just them small enough to toss into the washing machine, gentle cycle, usually. From my past mistakes, seems area rugs, can't handle the rougher cycles.

To keep the floor clean, check out one of those newer steam floor cleaners, help to kill any germs, with the kids on the floor, most of the time.

  6. Although most will say laminate because it is easier to clean. We thought the same thing and we were wrong. Unless you clean the floor five or six times a day, it is not worth it. It is like a surface that needs to be dusted constantly. With children hand prints and smudges and you get the picture. We are in the process of laying carpet in their room and the living area. We had went with laminate throughout the whole house and learned from experience.

  7. Definitely laminate flooring. We had our entire house done and removed every inch of carpet after one of our children was diagnosed with asthma. Let me tell you- it has made such a difference! I can not believe it... After I read up on what sorts of chemicals they put in carpeting, I will NEVER put carpeting in my home again. I would rather have cement floors than carpet! Second, you can vaccuum your carpet 10 times a day and it will still not be clean because carpet has tiny little pockets where dirt falls into. When they removed our carpet, it was absolutely disgusting what was underneath- and I DID vaccuum every single day! I had to with 3 children. Last of all, carpet is a breeding ground for dust mites which MANY children and adults are allergic to. Our pediatrican has always said that the least amount of fabric (carpet, curtains, etc...) a home has, the better.

  8. I would definitely go for laminate flooring.  With laminate, you can sweep and sanitize easily, carpet is much harder to clean and I dont know if you can ever really "sanitize" it without ruining it.

I would put a large carpet rug in the room for your child that covers most of the square footage, a cheap rug you wont mind tossing in a couple of years.

I am so mad at myself that I put carpeting in almost every room.  If I had it to do over again, I would have absolutley chosen hard wood or laminate in every room and just put large carpeted rugs down.  We spent a fortune on carpet, when we sell this house, at least 2 carpeted rooms are going to have to be replaced if we want the money we would be asking for the house.  We arent messy or dirty people either, I own a bissel spot bot and a great carpet cleaner, you just cant keep soaking your carpets each month (after toddler accidents) without damage to your floorboards.

  9. i think carpet is best. they make these things that i think may be called something like carpet squares. instead of being stapled down, they use little sticky things to attach to the floor. and if something gets spilled on them, u can remove that one square and replace it instead of having to replace the whole carpet. the carpet squares are a great idea for kids, and also if you rent. if u ever move, it should be easy to take up the carpet squares.

  10. Laminate would be the best way to got especially in a kids room. Here is a list of pros

1 - Increases the resale value of your home

2 - Limits the amount of allergens

3 - More durable than carpet (as long as you don't go super cheap)

4 - Easier to clean up spills and messes

If you do decide to go with laminate I would still recommend an area rug to soften the room and add some sound absorption.

  11. Carpet.  Kids play around on the floor on their knees alot and carpet is obviously softer then laminate.  As long as you don't let the kids have food or drinks in their room, i don't see stains being a problem.  I've had both in places I've lived and would definately choose carpet for a bedroom over laminate.

  12. Carper tiles are the best because if there's a stain you can't get out you can always replace that tile.

  13. Laminate definitely, I have lived in places with carpet but now the home I live in has laminate or Hardwood floors in every room and it is so much easier to keep clean, between late night stomach problems and toddler accidents and of course kids track in all sorts of dirt it is easier to keep my floors clean. Not only that carpet traps all sort of allergens and dirt no matter how many times a day you vacuum, couple that with the cost of professional cleaning, because you don't want to use a home carpet cleaner, they leave behind a film that attracts dirt and makes the carpets look dirty quicker and the chemicals that are left on the carpet aren't good for kids especially kids with asthma.  I will never go back to carpeting.
