Carpet smells after shampooing?

I shampooed with a cleaner, and it smelt good the next morning. I came home the next day and it smells like a wet animal/carpet...it's horrible!! Replacing the carpet is not an option since I'm a struggling college student. What are some oprions???

Sprinkle carpet freshener on it - I use Shake n Vac or Oust - leave for recommended time & hoover up.

Burn aromatherapy oils.

possibly because when things are wet they begin to smell if haven't been dried? Maybe you can open up windows, use some kind of air refreshener, a fan, hair blow dry the carpet? somehow just get it dry
