Question:

Carpooling & gas money?

There's a guy that gets a ride to work with us. It's bad enough that I have to make four trips a day to take my boyfriend to work (to and from in the morning and to and from in the afternoon) because we only have one vehicle for the time being. (We wrecked the other one). Well, this kid walks to our house in the morning (only a few blocks) and walks home. Shouldn't he give us some kind of gas money? I mean .. it's called carpooling .. a lot of people do this .. and whether or not I am going out of my way is irrelevant. He's getting a free ride -- meaning he pays NO car insurance since he doesn't have one and no gas, and I'm sitting here broke. Should I ask him for some?

  1. Go for it.

  2. gas prices are going down

  3. Yes you should totally be collecting at least half the cost of the gasoline - that's standard practice in a carpool.

Is it consistent like every day?  Yeah, then for sure.  It might be hard to approach the subject if it hasn't come up before, but you could approach the subject gently:

"Hey you know gas is pretty expensive and I think it's great we're carpooling.  I'm thinking about not driving in at all - maybe switching to public transit - but you know if we split the mileage cost for getting us to work we could keep carpooling?  What do you say?"

    Something like that... good luck!

  4. h**l yeah you should ask him for some? i know it sucks seeing all your money go to gas and car insurance right?. but seriously ask him for money, thats not fair at all for him to not pay.

Under those conditions (being broke), you should.  Just explain that you can no longer drive unless he pitches in. And that it is only fair. After all it is extra weight and that cost extra gas.

    Good Luck...
