Liverpool defender, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jamie-Carragher-c17728 believes the management job at Anfield is one of the biggest in Europe, and that the Reds need to finish in the top-four instead of just contending on domestic cup triumphs.
Currently, the managerial seat at Liverpool is lying vacant following the dismissal of Kenny Dalglish by the club’s owners on Wednesday.
However Carragher, a veteran of 699 games for the Merseyside club in all competitions, felt that the new manager will be under enormous pressure to meet the challenges and expectations of the owners and the fans.
While talking to reporters, he said: “It's one of the biggest jobs around and a lot of pressure comes with that.”
The Scott’s axing this week meant that Liverpool have now fired 3 managers over the last 2 years. Rafa Benitez, who is also amongst the leading contenders for the post after Dalglish’s departure, was axed in June 2010. The Spaniard was then replaced by Roy
Hodgson whose four month stint was the briefest in the history of Liverpool, as he was also relieved of his duties in view of the Reds abysmal standing in the league.
Nevertheless the English International termed the managerial http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Job-c18684 at Anfield as a ‘prestigious’ one, and mentioned that a lot of candidates were eager to take the post.
He was of the opinion that the Reds cannot go on spending lavishly like Manchester City and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786, and that they need to set themselves the realistic target of qualifying for the Champions League first, before setting the aim of winning the league title.
He continued, “Let's try and get back in that top four first as quickly as we can and then once you cement your place in there, you establish yourself and go again really.”
Liverpool last won the league title way back in the 1989/90 season under Dalglish. And even though they have won the European Cup on 5 occasions, their 8th place finish in the recently concluded season meant that they will be without Champions
League football for the third successive season.
However, the 34-year old indicated that breaking into the top four of the league requires a lot of hard work and consistency, but admitted that the Reds had let down their fans in the 2011/12 campaign.
He added, “We all realise now the Champions League is very important. It's the place to be seen and we are not there. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 fans probably don't want to hear it, but it is an achievement getting into the top four.”
He went on to say that different clubs go through turbulent periods from time to time, and that Liverpool will soon be back to their previous best.
