Liverpool stalwart, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/FC-Gomel-c39117 on Thursday carried more importance for his manager, Brendan Rodgers than for him.
The match marked the English International’s 700th appearance in a http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 shirt – a staggering feat that he has achieved over a period of 16 years.
However, it was also the Northern Irishman’s first competitive game in charge of the Reds manager, after he took over the Anfield throne earlier in June.
The 34-year old, who is one of the most experienced campaigners in the Premier League, expressed his delight upon reaching the landmark on Thursday night, and insisted that for him, every game for Liverpool carried immense importance.
Nevertheless, the defender valued the fixture more due to the fact that it was his manager’s first game in charge as the Reds boss, and indicated that his feat of playing 700 games for the Merseyside outfit came next to it.
While talking to reporters, he said: “It was a nice night for me on that score, but it was more important because it was the manager's first game. That's more important than me playing 700 games. It's a big thing for a manager in his first game, especially
playing in Europe. It's a big thing for Liverpool, great tradition.”
Rodgers got his Anfield managerial career off to a perfect start, as he guided his side to a disciplined 1-0 win against the Belarusian side away from home.
Speaking of the match, Carragher went on to praise his team-mates for getting the better of a team who were already half way into their season, but admitted the win did not come without them sweating their brows.
“It was a tough game, as European away games always are. They're in the middle of a season and I think you could see that in the fitness levels- they were much better at times than us.”
The veteran Red then went on to express his gratitude towards the fans for coming all the way to http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Belarus-c2849 to cheer for their team, when even his own father viewed it as a tedious journey.
