Liverpool’s veteran defender, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jamie-Carragher-c17728 has revealed that he used to be a big fan of the Everton football club when he was a child, and was heartbroken after the Toffees FA Cup final defeat in the 1986 final.
However, he remarked that his loyalty with Liverpool will not waver in the semi-final clash against the Toffees, despite his childhood affection with Everton.
“Everyone knows I was an Evertonian as a kid and I went to those finals, but now the boot is on the other foot." Carragher told The Daily Mirror.
Liverpool beat Everton twice in the FA Cup finals in the 1980’s. The Reds hammered their local rivals 3-1 in 1986, in front of a packed Wembley crowd. Three years later, Kenny Dalglish’s side edged the Toffees 3-2 to lift their fourth FA Cup crown.
The 34 year old conceded that he was devastated after both the defeats, and mentioned that he had seen both the matches at Wembley.
"I went in 1986 and 1989, and like I said I really don't want to go through that emotion and come back crying this time.” He added.
Nevertheless, the Englishman was pleased to see both the Merseyside teams do well in the competition this season, and felt that the fixture had created a great buzz in the city.
“I think this game is brilliant for the city. It's been a long time and I think it's going to be a great day out for everyone.”
The Reds defender described the contest as a ‘massive’ one for both the teams, and predicted that the eagerly anticipated match will live up to the expectations of the fans.
Carragher has made a staggering 694 appearances for the Reds since 1996. He highlighted that there was a time when Everton used to dominate the Reds in the English league, but insisted that things have changed over the last 15 years.
"They might beat us on Saturday, I don't know, but I think the days of Everton bullying Liverpool [are over].”
