Liverpool’s warhorse http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jamie-Carragher-c17728 came out in support of the heavily criticised new players, following the Reds abysmal 2011/12 campaign.
The Merseyside club made ostentatious signings over the last year and a half, in the form of Andy Carroll, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Stewart-Downing-c34221 and Jose Enrique.
However, apart from Luis Suarez who arrived at Anfield in last year’s January transfer window, the other new comers failed to justify their price tags. Liverpool finished at the eighth place in the league table, meaning that despite spending more than 100
million pounds in the last two years, the club will be without Champions League football for the third successive season.
However Carragher, a veteran of 699 games for Liverpool, lashed out at the media for meting out unjustified criticism over the new players.
He told the reporters, “I think they have had a lot of unfair criticism. Henderson, Downing, [Charlie] Adam, Carroll - whoever it may be, it's always been a new signing.”
Carroll arrived at the Merseyside club in January from Newcastle United for a club record fee of 35 million pounds. He remains to this date the most expensive English player in the history of the Premier League. Later in the summer transfer window, Liverpool
also bought Jordan Henderson (20 million pounds), Jose Enrique (7 million pounds) and Charlie Adam (7 million pounds).
The English International was of the opinion that the new players tend to find it difficult during their first term at a club, and that the senior players should he held accountable for the Reds poor campaign instead.
“I think its players like myself, players who've been here a long time who deserve more criticism than the new players. They've just been finding their feet, learning what http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 is all about.” He added.
Liverpool’s former director of football Damien Comolli was sacked by the club, as a result of the Reds abject league form in the second half of the season, and also due to the failure of the expensive signings masterminded by the Frenchman. And with Liverpool
falling short of capturing the FA Cup title and finishing behind http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Job-c18684.
While the Reds continue their search for the new boss at Anfield, the English International mentioned that the new appointment will get the full support and rapport from all his team-mates.
He continued, “At Liverpool, we would all like to know who our manager is. Whoever it is, you give 100 per cent at the start of the season.”
