Carran Macholly baulks first, wins race at Perry Barr
It is often said that the path to victory is often a long and winding one that is full of obstacles. In the world of 480m greyhound racing, the path to victory is circular, but the obstacles are definitely still there.
Carran Macholly’s win today at Perry Barr Stadium in Birmingham did, in fact, feature quite a few obstacles. But the 6-4 favourite overcame everything in front of him to win this A8 race in 29.89 seconds. Coming out of trap four, Carran Macholly moved quickly away from the pack, and then baulked first. His woes continued as he crowded the quarter, but he recovered to lead, and never looked back.
Only a half length separated first place from second. Killeavy Knight (7-1) crowded the run in, and trotted to a 29.93 second-place finish. Effernogue Dusty (7-2) was a single length behind second place with his finishing time of 30.01 from trap five.
Dream Legend (4-1) dreamed of a legendary finish in this race, but baulked first and crowded at the quarter after holding an early pace. He ended up in fourth place with a time of 30.09, which was 1 length behind Effernogue Dusty.
Highfire Bill’s (4-1) flame went out early, as he finished the race in 30.09 to lock up fifth place. He was only a shoulder’s length out of fourth place. The bottom spot went to 8-1 long shot Monkspath Mackie, whose 30.23 finish placed him 1¾ lengths behind Highfire Bill.
Traffic jams are as common on the roads as they are in greyhound racing. This was evident in the A6 race, as five of the six dogs finished very close to one another. Winning the race in 29.76 was 2-1 favourite Derryhogan Kirst. Despite a stumbled start from trap three, he finished well to claim the victory.
Matching the winner’s time was 11-4 long shot Shreyas Spartan, who came in second. He was a shoulder’s length out of the top spot. A neck’s length behind him was third-place finisher Solaway King (7-1), who finished the race in 29.79.
Coolcholly Point (7-2) placed fourth in 29.85, and was behind Solaway King by ¾ lengths. The same number of lengths separated Autumn Cavalier (5-1) from the number four spot. He completed the race in 29.91 for a fifth-place finish.
Rounding out the pack was Distant Bailey (7-1), who finished the race in 30.35. A large distance of 5½ lengths separated him from fifth place.
The favourites dominated in some of today’s races at Perry Barr Stadium, and they will get an opportunity to continue their winning ways on Friday 17 September. The first race of the night is scheduled to begin at 19.25.
