Manchester United’s http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Michael-Carrick-c25282 has stated that the Red Devils were confused during Athletic Bilbao’s third goal, as the team believed the ball was going to be passed back to them.
Carrick, along with a number of other United players seem to have been under the impression that the free kick which led to Bilbao’s third goal, was going to be hit behind for a goal kick, or straight into the hands of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/David-de-Gea-c10463.
During the game, Patrice Evra’s boot came off, but the defender went on to pass the ball any way. It is illegal to play with only one shoe and hence the referee went on to blow his whistle to indicate a free kick.
However, Carrick insists that the match official insisted that the ball would be played back to United, which was not the case. Bilbao seized their opportunity and went on to score a third away goal in the game.
Carrick, when talking about the situation is quoted to have said: "Their [third] goal was a strange one. The referee had told us they were kicking it back to us, so we stopped and they scored. “
"Then obviously we got the penalty straight back, but theirs counts for a little bit more, being the away goal."
The midfielder has also gone on to admit that the second leg is going to be a massive test for the team, given the way the Manchester based club played in the first leg.
Carrick also believes that it is going to be down to the team’s mentality to come back from a defeat at Old Trafford to go on and turn the tie around and pick up the win.
He then went on to add: "It was always going to be a tough second leg. The tie was never going to be dead tonight, we knew that.”
"It's obviously disappointing to lose the game first and foremost. Going forward I thought we looked quite dangerous at times, but they had a lot of chances and that's not like us. We're not happy with that at all.
