Wildcard entrants Guillermo Carry and Diego Hidalgo got rid of the Argentinean pair of Juan Pablo Brzezicki with Pablo Galdon in doubles first round of the Ciudad de Guayaquil Challenger 2011.
The two squads took up the gauntlet on outdoor clay courts of the Guayaquil Tenis Club in Guayaquil, Ecuador. After battling for one hour and thirty two minutes the Argentinean Carry with Ecuadorian Hidalgo survived a mid match lapse against the Argentinean couple to score a 7-6(1), 4-6, 10-5 on the 21st of November 2011.
This was the first time the two squads were meeting and serving first was Carry/ Hidalgo, they smashed an ace in the opening game and bagged a seventy seven percent of their second service points.
They managed to save seven out of eight breakpoints and capitalized on fifty percent of breakpoints won. Even though, they had a poor return, it was still better than their adversaries and managed to bag a fifty two percent of their total points won in the opening round.
Mean while, Brzezicki/ Galdon had hit a walloping eighty three percent of their first serves on target but only accomplished a fifty percent of their second service points in the initial round. They had a poor defence and were only able to save fifty percent of their breakpoints and benefited from only thirteen percent of breakpoints won.
Although, they smashed two aces but with a pitiable return were only able to attain forty eight percent of their total points won in the initial round.
However, at the end of the twelfth game both the teams had bagged six games each and eventually the set was pushed into a tiebreaker. The head-to-head run had lost its vapour and Carry/ Hidalgo rushed past their adversaries towards the finish line and clinched the tiebreaker at 7-1 to clog the opening set.
In a reversal of fortune during the second set, the Argentinean duo took a notch higher and pulled their sleeves to hit seventy four percent of their first serves on target and clogged a walloping seventy percent of their first service points won.
Moreover, they saved an eighty percent of their breakpoints and instead capitalized on a hundred percent of breakpoints won. Although they still had a poor return, it was much better than the previous set. By accomplishing a fifty percent of the total set points, they secured the second set and by the end of the first two sets both the teams had bagged a set apiece.
Ultimately the match was pushed into a super tiebreaker, during the tiebreaker the players once again matched a blow for a blow and neither player wanted the other to take the lead. The game tied for the first five points, however, from there onwards the wildcard entrants brought out their A-game to clinch the tiebreaker at 10-5.
In doing so; they not only won the match but also reserved a spot in the second round of the doubles event where they will be facing either the unseeded team of Pavol Cervenak with Fernando Romboli or the second seeded pair of Marcel Felder with Rodrigo-Antonio Grilli.
