Question:

Carry-on Questions?

Ok, I will be flying to Guangzhou, China with my soon to be 19 months old son. Will I be able to bring a laptop and also a DSLR camera as a carry-on plus besides a backpack? Do you have any suggestion on how to pack these two as I will be having my hands full already with a toddler for a 7 hours flight from Indonesia but I just don't feel safe enough to put my camera and laptop as a checked luggage as some of you know the Indonesian airport is no the 'safest'. It will be a 7 hours flight (totally) with a stop over of 3 hours in Singapore.

Thanks!

  1. your best bet is to pack everything away in your luggage and double protect your goodies.  Having a baby on a plane will take up all your attention so you wont have time to mess with your camera or laptop. You might as well save yourself from the headache.  Oh and you cant have camera's on the plane anyway.  Why?  Im not sure but I know when I flew from the states to germany you werent allowed to have anything really.  Oh and good luck with trying to make formula.  That stuff sux because you have to bring empty bottles and ask for water.

  2. I don't know what airline you are flying.   Some, like LAN, are very specific about only one carry on and one personal item.    I would suggest putting your laptop in its own bag and everything else in your backpack.    I don't think you'll have a problem

  3. Most airlines allow you to carry a laptop and a camera in addition to your normal carry-on allowance, so I do not foresee any problems with you being able to take both.

I agree with you that I would NEVER put those items in my checked luggage! To help keep your luggage safer, I suggest that you lock it with a lock, and put a luggage strap around it. The harder you make it for people to open it, the less likely they are to try. Also, I don't know if they offer it at the airport where you will be flying out of, but I always wrap my luggage with that clear wrap. It costs me $5 a bag and they guarantee that security will not open my bags or they will pay for any damage/stolen items. If your airport does not offer the service, you can do it yourself at home. Just buy the wrap form an office supply store and wrap your bags before going to the airport. It also works to protect the bags against damage.

If you update your question to include what airline you will be flying, I could check for you to verify the rules for laptops and cameras.

  4. I have no idea but you can sure try. =/ or try stuffing your DSLR camera in your laptop case or your backpack and put the accessories in your luggage.

  5. I think they'll allow two carry on bags, you could fit your laptop into your bacpack if it has a padded pocket, and just carry the camera in its case
