Carry on baggage question?

Okay so I looked up on the airline I'm using that carry on baggage "should not be more than 9 x 14 x 22 in or 45 linear in" And the bag I was planning on using is 20X 10.5x12.5 in is that ok? Airlines seriously confuse me....

  1. Yes, that's fine. If you add up 20+10.5+12.5, it's 43 linear inches - your airline allows 45, so you're good ("45 linear inches" means that you add up all the dimensions and if the sum is 45 or less, the bag is the right size).

EDIT: As long as your bag is "soft-sided" (like a duffel bag), you'll be fine.

  2. You could look at it like this:

    9      x 14     x 22

    10.5 x 12.5 x 20

As you can see, 10.5 is more than 9, so that's too much.

12.5 is less than 14, so that's ok

20 is less than 22, so that's ok too

Your bag may cause problems because 10.5 is 1.5 more than 9.

But it totally depends on the airline. Internationally, it often seems that no one cares, judging by the small suitcases that some people lug on board as hand luggage. In my country, I have great problems with the domestic flights if my hand luggage is even 0.5 over the limit.

Having travelled quite often, especially long distance, I can advise you to stick to the rules of the airline you're flying with, and for your own comfort, take as small a bag as possible. My longest flights are 13-14 hours and what do you really need: maybe a clean shirt and undies, a book and/or magazine, toothbrush/toothpaste, comb, ladies' or men's perfume (to hide your own smells and avoid having to smell other people), your ipod or similar if you're young, your ticket/passport/money. The rest is on the plane: food, toilet, movie, chair to sleep in, pillow. Unless you're travelling with some obscure airline to a remote place, then you can expect anything.

  3. ya the 12.5 is under 14, the 10.5 is just barelt above 9 and the 20 is under 22. they'll allow it.  They don't measure it when it's that close.  It'll fit in the overhead compartment so you'll be fine.  I believe (by my head's calculations) it's still under 45 linear inches.

Edit: I can promise you with 100% certainty that it will fit, if it doesn't I will give you my address and u can come punch me in the face that is how 100% sure I am about it!!! (lol. seriously I am positive that you'll be fine though)
