I have a new style beetle that carries 4 passengers. There is room for an extra person in the back though (the middle seat doesn't have a seatbelt). Where does the law stand if say I had an extra passenger in the back with no seatbelt and this person was an adult.

  1. In California, and, I'll bet, in every other state in the US, the law limits the number of people who can legally ride in a car to the number of OPERABLE seatbelts.

There's room on the hood, roof and in the trunk, but do you expect that passengers can legally ride in these locations?

Or people sitting on each other's laps?

  2. its a 4 seat car ..thats 3 passengers one driver..if eather one of those 4 people do not have a seat belt on ..the driver will get his *** kicked by some nice cop..or if you have an accident the person with no belt on in the back will fly through the wind screen killing the driver and the front passenger as well as being killed them selfs..does this help you?

  3. you can get a ticket if he does not have a seatbelt. he also has a greater chance of serious injury if there is a car accident. i belive that you can get an extra seatbelt installed.

  4. The law is very simple................the number of seat belts in a car equals the number of people that can ride in it...................
