Carryon Bag?

I am flying southwest airlines, and according to their website, i am allowed to bring 2 carrry-on bags, "One bag plus one smaller, personal-type item" Does the "personal-type item" include totes, or is it just something like purses?

A smaller type item would constitute anything that you could slide under the seat in front of you.  I just flew on Southwest to Vegas and was able to place a duffle bag under the seat without any problems.
