  1. I couldn't really afford to fill up my 20 gallon fuel tank when gas was $2/gallon, and I certainly can't afford to do so now!  Yes, people are addicted to the infernal combustion engine.  They will continue to buy them, sell them, and use them.  People like to go fast on freeways, so that means they want and will buy gasoline, diesel, and ethynol vehicles.

They won't want electrics for power or speed, so gasoline vehicles will still find use, although out love affair with them is at a definite end!  I see new cars as being small, like Mini Coopers.  VW bugs, like they had in the 1960's would be a smash hit right now, but VW insists on selling its newer rather ugly models.  (I think people rather liked the VW beatle, though back then gas was cheap so few people wanted small cars like the beatle.)

I'd sure buy a new VW beatle today!

  2. Yes.But I would wish folks would put off buying a new car for a couple of years if only to get better mileage,it will take a hugh slow down of Carr buying to get their attention.More models need to be out there and at a reasonable price or hybrids even, now where are the technicians to work on them if there should be a problem? We are in for some rough times ahead.

  3. im sure people will still buy them..but gas will be insanely high.

  4. What else would they buy?  Hybrids and other non-gas systems are thousands of dollars more expensive than their conventional counterparts.  People who do the numbers will see it's cheaper in the long-term to drive a smaller fuel-efficient car, than it is to go overboard and want hybrids exclusively.

I grew-up overseas, where gas has always been more expensive. The present prices are nothing new to me, kinda reminds me of my college days abroad where most of my allowance money went into fuel first, then subsistence for the rest.  Hardly anything left for weekend 'luxuries' like, oh, courtship, dating, useless cruising or road trips with my crew.

You learn to economize, and actually 'drive' vs just 'steering' a car around.  Most foreigners drive stick-shift, because that automatic transmission adds to the price of the car and also makes it less fuel-efficient.

When you have total control over engine revs and shift points, you control your fuel consumption.  That's not the case with an Auto trans, where you're at the mercy of the shift computer (if there's one), the state of your transmission fluid, how the engine's feeling, and any bad habits you've picked-up because you're used to just 'play gas-n-brake'.

The next few years will prove to be an interesting sight to see what will still be rolling around.

  5. prices too high to buy cars?  what do you think Europe has done? they've been paying $8+ per gallon for many many years.  Of course people will buy them, they will just conserve and cut down elsewhere in their budgets.
