Thank you all for answers so far on why people use cars.

In Europe it is not the same as the U.S. and U.K. also it is not the same in Asia and the Philippines as in all these places we have great public transport, for Example in Switzerland nobody actually needs a car. In the Philippines nobody needs a car either as there are Boats, Buses, trains and jeepneys. In all of Europe the public transport is very good. While it is true people do sometimes have a car (if living in a remote French village for example) normally people spend money on other things like clothes, skis, holidays, restaurants, movies, houses etc. In Europe a car does not define status, it is defined by your personality. Please let us know in your answer if you are in the UK, US, Europe, Asia or which country you are in and how is the situation there. It is interesting to learn how you live in other places.

Road accidents kill

Well you all know climate change is destroying lives, and biofuels are pushing up food prices.

  1. The government are responsible for many things, but personal freedom is a much values commodity. I would rather have a car than be opressed.

  2. Sweden has a vision zero for road casualties. It is a target.Governments in most countries could do a lot more to reduce road carnage but they have other priorities.

  3. Where do you think the UK is if not a part of Europe?

  4. nobody actually needs a car hmmmmm should I get a Mustang or I need Horse's power

  5. Cars don't kill,  but people who drive them do, sometimes through being drunk, falling asleep, driving too fast, so why is that the governments fault.  People use cars because very often the transport system is non existent, or more expensive, try taking a family on the train and you will understand why people drive. In UK, public transport is expensive, and is set to get more so, until they bring down prices people are going to continue to use their vehicles.
