  1. Rolls-Royce and Bentley

  2. The break point for expensive cars in the 50s was around $10,000.  That was the point above which you'd find Rolls Royces, Bentleys and Ferraris.

In the movie "Never Steal Anything Small" (1959) Mike MacIllany (James Cagney) tries to bribe Linda Cabot (Cara Williams) into doing what he wants her to do by ushering her into a showroom where he offers to buy her a car, and they launch into the duet "I'm Sorry, I want a Ferrari" in which he argues against a $14,000 Ferrari 250 GT Boano Coupe that's rolling on a treadmill ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8rQ8ePrNY... )

A racing Ferrari would have gone for even more.

    Consider:

The Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint visible in the showroom has a posted price of $3,298, which was already expensive.

The Morris Minor Cabriolet in the background of one shot is listed at only $1,725!

A VW Beetle went for around $1,100 back then.

I went to the Auto Show in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1954 and there was a white Cadillac Eldorado Convertible on a rotating stand that had white leather seats and gold-plated wire wheels.  The memory is fading but I know the sign on the stand gave a price in the mid-$6,000 range.

Doosenberger?  In the 50s?  Man, sometimes it takes real restraint not to flame someone!

  3. Cadilliac convertible

  4. a doosenberger (sp?) they would build cars from the ground up for anyone that could pay the price. if you wanted wood from a tree in your back yard, they would use the tree from your back yard.

  5. The Continental MK II ( Mark 2) by Ford/Lincoln. A wonderful car. It was transported to the dealer in a cotton bag that it drove into!
