  1. Volkswagen Lupo 1.2L TDI gets 90+ MPG.  But it was never imported to the US.

The MPG #'s on those cars are actually a lot less when driven like people do in 2007.  By 1973 standards (No A/C, 55 mph, 0-60 in 20 seconds) they got 60 mpg.

Get an older 1990's Honda Civic CRX HF (High Fuel Economy).  Really got over 50 MPG!  Check out www.fueleconomy.gov

The Volkswagen Jetta gets almost 50 mpg, and you can fill it up at your local restaurant for free.  You can get a used one cheap and technically get unlimited "miles per gallon" of petroleum.  Just make sure it is the diesel model.  Good luck!

  2. Neither of them will get that kind of mileage in real life. They would only get that kind of milage if you didn't have to drive in traffic, without heat or AC, no wind, or go up any hills. The real number for them is closer to 30 to 40 miles per gallon. Similar to a small car.

  3. I often get 60+mpg from my prius, especially if it's warm. The toyota Aygo and some diesels get >60mpg on long runs. remember US gallons are smaller than imperial.

My other car is an electric 205 so infinite MPG; but it is a one off conversion.

other realisic electiric vehicles are the Tesla www.teslamotors.com and the Phoenix SUT www.phoenixmotors.com.

but why decent electric cars are not available to buy is a mystery. see www.whokilledtheelectriccar.com

  4. I'm afraid they are the only two "common" cars that get that good of mileage.

  5. There are more and more cars now getting over 60mpg. Check out the Peugeot 107 the Citroen C1 and they Toyota Aygo

    They can get over 70mpg

There are some quadricycles which can get close on 100mpg. This can be done without hybrid technology so there's no reason why we shouldn't be able to drive cars which can exceed 100mpg in the future.

  6. Tomorrow I will test drive a Prius that has been modified by CalCars to achieve 100 mpg in at the 2007 Austin Clean Energy Venture Summit.  It's there if we want it.

  7. the really bad news is that neither of them gets 60 mpg.

the testing is weird, and gives skewed results.

seems i've heard that prius is really only between 35 and 40.

    on a good day.

assuming that you use your breaks in the manner that conserves energy.

and there are lots of folks that don't do that.

the insite is smaller, and logically should get more, but i've not heard that it does.

i have read that there a movement toward changing the testing to make the results more accurate.

but i believe that's still a couple years in the future.
