Cartier Martin scores 20 as Washington Wizards thump the Philadelphia 76ers 97-76 - NBA Recap
On Friday, 30th March, the Washington Wizards played host to the Philadelphia 76ers at the Verizon Center, Washington DC and Cartier Martin, in his second game back, scored 20 points to lead the Wizards past the 76ers
97-76.
The Wizards were coming off from a tough loss to the Indiana Pacers last night. In their second of back-to-back games though, they pulled off a gutsy performance to get a good win against the team from Philadelphia.
The match started off with Philadelphia getting a 4-0 lead from their first two trips to the basket with Elton Brand scoring twice in quick fashion. It took the Wizards 4 attempts to open their scoring account when Jordan Crawford
was able to score on an easy lay-up. From then onwards the action went back and forth, with both teams scoring at will.
With 2:27 remaining in the first quarter, Washington was able to put together 7 points as the 76ers who failed to score in the closing stages of the first period. Washington led at the end of the first, 23-15.
Nene was the leading scorer for Washington with 6 points while he also had 2 assists to his name. Elton Brand had 6 points for the Sixers at the end of the first period.
With the momentum from the previous quarter on their side, Washington were able to dominate the early goings of the 2 period.
The home team was looking to run away with the game and John Wall and company seemed to be in complete control as they were able to help the Wizards extend their lead to as much by 20 points with only under a minute remaining in
the half. The Wizards ultimately closed out the half 19 points ahead of the visitors (55-36).
Crawford had 8; Wall had 9 points for the Wizards while Nene also chipped in with 7 of his own at the half way stage. Elton Brand was leading the 76ers with 8 points at the same point.
In the third period, the 76ers showed some resistance by managing to outscore the Wizards by 2 points, 26-24. But, the bigger picture projected an entirely different story as the Wizards held on to a comfortable lead throughout
the frame. Even after managing to outscore the home team, Philadelphia were still behind by 17 points (62-79).
Martin who came off the bench, contributed 10 points for the Wizards while Louis Williams trying very hard from the other side. He too put 12 points from the Sixers bench at the end of the third period.
In the fourth quarter, Washington outscored the Sixers 18-14 to close out the game 21 points ahead of the visitors.
Cartier Martin who had recently been acquired back from the D-League put up a strong performance with 20 points and 6 rebounds. Crawford and Kevin Seraphin also contributed well with 17 and 14 respectively for the Wizards.
Louis Williams and Thaddeus Young had 14 each for the 76ers as they took a demoralizing loss away from home.
