Cartoons similar to Avatar?

I just finished watching all three seasons of Avatar the last Air Bender and was wondering if anyone could suggest another cartoon that would appeal to an adult. I prefer cartoons that are broad in scope and story. Ive tried a few Japanese anime recently but the stories in the few I watched were either off the wall dramatic as to make it seem like a professional wrestling script where all the characters suffered from severe depression, or something pulled out of the mind of a 12 year old girl hopped up on cough medicine. Obviously not all anime or cartoons in general are like this, so help me out with a few suggestions! Thanks in advance

This really depends on what you like. Probably your best bet would be older cartoons like Thundarr or the 80's Hulk and Iron Man. As for Anime, I would try Inuyasha. That has a fairly good plot line that is not totally action but not totally the characters gushing or moaning at each other.

The Ghost in the Shell films and series is a mature/serious anime and very good as well as well regarded . ( I am having problems typing because I am laughing about the cough-syrup analogy you used - lol ! )
