Comments: Mayweather made an unprecedented phone call from an undisclosed location to the office on Aug. 18th, 2010, wishing to speak to field detective John Martinez. He proceeded to candidly discuss his nephew Floyd, and the recent criticism he has warranted due to failing to negotiate a fight contract with seven-division champion Manny Pacquiao. The following content includes statements from the Mayweather call as well as critical synopses of the statements by the bureau on the case. While all synopses are speculation, it is expected that readers coming to the case file will be well aware of the underpinning events of the case, and to which Mr. Mayweather refers.
Roger Mayweather: “This fight has to happen; we want this fight. The fight for my nephew is Manny. This is the fight that makes the most sense when talking about money making, but also, this fight has to happen cause it’s important to the fans. The people want to see this fight and they should get what they want.”
Synopsis: After months of relative silence, Mayweather makes the boldest statement of any from his camp in regards to a potential fight with Manny Pacquiao. As might be expected, not only was Mayweather’s call surprising. It was national news. Weeks ago Floyd Mayweather’s first advisor Leonard Ellerbe stated publicly that his camp had not engaged in any negotiations for a Pacquiao fight, despite Top Rank’s repeated public appeal to put a contract together. Many experts waved this comment off as a bold-faced non-truth. Roger’s comments confirm that, and apparently speak for the entire Mayweather camp in saying that ‘they’ (“we”) want the fight to happen. At this time, the statement’s accuracy cannot be confirmed.
Roger Mayweather: “I’m hearing people say my nephew’s scared of Manny Pacquiao. Floyd ain’t scared of Manny. Lil’ Floyd ain’t scared of (censored), why should he be? Let me ask this question, who’s been knocked out twice? […] The only reason this fight hasn’t happened is because Manny won’t agree to random blood tests throughout training camp.”
Synopsis: Mayweather is insistent in recognizing his nephew’s superiority over Pacquiao. The reference to someone being knocked out twice refers to Pacquiao, who has suffered two knockouts in his lengthy career. The comparison seems apt to make the case Floyd Mayweather is the superior fighter due to the fact that he remains undefeated in over 40 professional fights. The final comment refers to an issue that marred negotiations for a bout the first time around. The Mayweather camp wished that one of the contract stipulations be that Pacquiao submit to random blood and urine tests up to 14 days before the fight. The Pacquiao camp responded that this was unacceptable (it having previously never been stated on a contract), and further that it was a personal insult. Pacquiao sued the Mayweather team for defamation of character, a lawsuit still ongoing.
Roger Mayweather: “This (censored) says he agreed to tests, but he really didn’t. He wants to know when these tests are happening and he wants them to end at a certain time. How the (censored) is that random drug testing? If you got nothing to hide, then why be so concerned about when you gotta take a drug test? (Brief pause.) How you gonna leave over 100 million dollars on the table cause you don’t want to take random drug tests leading up to the fight? I know why. ‘Cause you got something to hide.”
Synopsis: Roger Mayweather gives his version of why fight negotiations fell through. This is to be contrasted with Pacquiao’s. His camp, led by Bob Arum, claims that they submitted to all of Mayweather’s terms, but that Mayweather never got back to them.
