I know mental illness is nothing to be made light of but how strict are these places concerning voluntary commitment?

  1. I work with people with mental illness, some time people with mental illness do try to bet the system because they try to bet a criminal rap. However, in most cases most people that suffer from mental illness try everything in their  power to not be committed until they can no longer take care of themselves. think about this way, would you like to be label for the rest of your life by a mental illness and only be known as the mental illness or "crazy person" that has no identity but what they are label as. Everyday in our society we do this, we label people and we all know what it means to be label with mental illness. We forget that the person that has the mental illness is someone mother, father, sister, brother, daughter or son. SO DO YOU WANT TO GIVE UP YOUR IDENTITY TO HANG OUT? I think not. so why would anyone else want to?

    GOOD QUESTION!

  2. That's a good question.  I don't know myself.  Your question immediately reminded me of classic old film titled One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest starring Jack Nicholson.  He basically faked his way in as an inpatient to just "hang out" for free room & board.

  3. Some aren't as strict as others..due to the fact that when someone says they are going to kill themselves they don't take it very lightly.

The hospital here...you fill out forms..talk to a therapist and any family or friends if applicable and decide. That's it.
