Casey Dellacqua and Olivia Rogowska awarded Apia International Sydney wild cards – Tennis News
It has been confirmed by the organizers that two of Australia’s rising female players, Casey Dellacqua and Olivia Rogowska, will get wild card entries into the main draw of next season’s Apia International Sydney tournament. It
is a warm-up event for the first Grand Slam of the season, the Australian Open, and is played on outdoor hard courts of Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre.
Dellacqua and Rogowska are lucky because they will get an opportunity to play this event alongside seven of the best 10 players in the world. Some of the biggest names featuring at the next edition of Apia International Sydney
are Agnieszka Radwanska, Angelique Kerber, Sara Errani, Li Na, Petra Kvitova, Caroline Wozniacki and the fellow Australian Sam Stosur.
Expressing her happiness on getting the wild card, Dellacqua said, "I'm extremely grateful for the opportunity to play main draw. It's going to be extra tough because it is such a strong field in Sydney."
Dellacqua did not take part in the Sydney International last year. She prepared for the Australian Open by participating in the Brisbane International and the WTA event in Hobart, losing in the first and second round respectively.
She went down at the hands of the eventual champion in the second round of the Australian Open.
The Australian player added, "It's an important lead-up tournament for me because I had to pull out of the Hopman Cup. I'm definitely on track for the Australian Open and playing Sydney is the perfect preparation."
Rogowska is also happy to get the wild card for the Sydney International. Talking to news reporters about her wild card, the Australian number thee stated "I'm thrilled to be a main draw entry into the Sydney event. I've never
played main draw in Sydney before so I am really looking forward to the opportunity to compete in such a prestigious tournament where the field is extremely tough."
Sydney International’s tournament director, Craig Watson, is also excited due to the fact that a handful of local players will be taking part in the event. Australian number one, Stosur, will be one of the title favourites during
the week log event.
