Casey Dellacqua crushes Shahar Peer; moves into the second round of Brussels Ladies Open
World number 429 Casey Dellacqua is through to the second round, having rallied to upend Shahar Peer of Israel in the first round, 6-1, 5-7, 6-3.
The 26-year-old Australian converted five of six break point chances, en route to a victory in two hours and eleven minutes. Peer struggled with her second serves and remained unable to win more than 48 percent of the points and
allowed her Australian opponent to level their head-to-head sequence to 1-1.
The 26-year-old Dellacqua was very effective from the beginning with her two-handed backhands. Peer on the other hand, approached the net only two times, winning just one game. She landed with 82 percent of her first serves but
due to massive pressure she couldn’t register a huge conversion rate behind them. Things were better for her at the beginning of the match but few mistakes during the process made her nervous and she lost the first set with a bread stick defeat. Dellacqua
looked remarkably unruffled and continued to keep her focus on the ball.
She played the first set with a lot of patience and her strategies gave her a lot in the way of results. She won the first set with 66 percent of points on her service, 59 percent of points on return and 63 percent of points in
total.
The success was short lived, however, as Peer quickly took control in the second set. Dellacqua began to spray errors from all over the court and Peer had to do a little more than keep the ball in the court. Already down at 1-5,
the world number 429 tossed in three double-faults on a break point to fall into a significant hole. Peer took care of her next two service games to tie the score one set apiece.
With momentum in hand, Peer looked a bit over confident and that badly affected her game at the end of the match. Dellacqua immediately exploited her weaknesses and stepped up the level of her game. The 26-year-old never came close
to giving away the lead because she merely dropped two points on first serves. She finished off the proceedings with a service hold at 5-5, clinching victory on her first match point with a perfect forehand down the line.
Dellacqua wrapped up the match with three aces and four double faults. Furthermore she scored 63 percent on service, 46 percent on return and 55 percent in total. Peer on the other hand finished off the match with 54 percent of
points on service, 37 percent on return and 45 percent in total.
Emerging victorious today, Dellacqua has improved her year-to-date win loss mark to 7-5 matches. She now moves on ahead to face either Japanese Ayumi Morita or Chinese Zheng Jie.
