Casey Dellacqua defeats Aleksandra Wozniak in the quarterfinals – Texas Tennis Open 2012
Ranked 106th in the WTA Premier Rankings, Casey Dellacqua gave the Canadian number one, Aleksandra Wozniak a straight sets upset of 6-4, 6-4 in the quarter-finals of Texas Tennis Open on Wednesday.
The Australian tennis star wrapped her victory in a total of 67 minutes to book a berth in the semi-finals of the tournament.
Dellacqua started the match at an excellent pace, igniting a series of break points and successfully maintained her early lead in the opener. The 24-year-old Canadian struggled hard and equalized the scores to 4-all to pull
down her opponent. However, Dellacqua then took hold of the moment and jolted down a 6-4 score to bag the opening set comprehensively.
The 27-year-old smashed a single ace but double faulted twice. She had a high first serve percentage of 71, bagging 13 of 20 first and three of eight second serve points. The 50th ranked Canadian hit
a single ace and double faulted only once in the opener. She had a relatively lower first serve of 58 with nine of 18 and six of 13 second reply points in the opening.
The second set followed the similar trend as the opening one did but this time the Canadian contender adopted a more aggressive game plan. She captured the first three games, building a 3-love advantage right away. Nonetheless,
she was unable to sustain her lead and immediately the scores were neutralized to 3-all in the middle. Both players were able to break each other’s serve twice during the set. Towards the end, the 27-year-old veteran nailed a critical serve break and consolidated
a 6-4 win.
Unluckily, Wozniak could not pounce any ace on her contender; however, she never double faulted in the second set. She had a moderate first serve percentage of 68, pocketing nine of 17 first and three of eight second deliveries.
The Aussie contender fired a single ace and double faulted once at a critical point during the match. In contrast, she had a lower first serve percentage of 61, but she managed to bag 12 of 17 first and six of 11 second deliveries in the closing set.
The Australian will be contesting against the Serbian former world number one Jelena Jankovic in the semi-finals. Jankovic was successful against the eight seeded Romanian, Sorana Cirstea, 6-2, 6-1, in the quarter-final draw
earlier that day.
