Casey Dellacqua’s mind-blowing season rewarded with wild cards – Tennis Special
After enjoying a phenomenal 2011 season which saw her lifting seven titles and going on a 30 match unbeaten run, Aussie Casey Dellacqua was rewarded wild cards for the Brisbane International, Moorilla Hobart International
and the Australian Open.
The 26-year-old Aussie reached his career best rank at number 39 in the Sony Ericsson WTA Premier Rankings in 2008 but foot and shoulder injuries kicked her out of the Top 200. Her career best season in 2008 saw her making
a fourth round berth at the Australian Open and third round showings at the French Open and Wimbledon Championships. In addition to this, she made a final showdown in the women’s doubles at the French Open.
"After missing most of 2010 with a foot injury I have spent this year building on my confidence and match practice," the beaming Aussie said. "I now finally feel like I am playing some good tennis and with six Pro Tour event
wins under my belt I have the confidence I needed going into the summer.”
The Perth native enjoyed an exceptional 2011, grabbing seven singles titles at the ITF Women’s Circuit and clinched the mixed doubles at the French Open, third of the fourth Grand Slam. Dellacqua started the season with disappointment
as she lost her first match at the Mildura ITF event while standing at rank 402. The next month she fell almost 250 ranks and carried her losing ways at the Ipswich ITF event before re-focusing her strategy.
The left-handed star recreated her magic at the Bundaberg ITF event, where she cruised to claim her maiden year-to-date title (she stunned fourth seed Olivia Rogowska in straight sets in the final round). The Aussie’s form
dipped again afterwards, as she exited from early rounds or the qualifiers from all the ITF and WTA tournaments she participated.
After a huge blow at the US Open where she was ranked 286th in this final Grand Slam event of the year, Dellacqua re-structured her strategy and cruised at the Cairns ITF event. She slew seventh seed
Ayu Fani Damayanti in the semis and trashed Pole Sandra Zaniewska in the title-round to claim her second title of the season. The Aussie maintained consistency in her game and quickly bagged another five games to triumph at the Darwin ITF event (crippled seventh
seed Akiko Omae in the final).
Her superb run of form continued for the next twenty matches, including four more titles and ending the season at world number 134. Dellacqua got the spotlight at the Esperance ITF (downed second seed Olivia Rogowska), Kalgoorlie
ITF (dumped her compatriot Monique Adamczak), Traralgon ITF (overpowered fourth seed Sacha Jones) and Bendigo ITF (tumbled over third seed Isabella Holland in the final round).
"It is an amazing opportunity to be able to play the Australian Open, Brisbane and Hobart without having to worry about qualifying, and it is really going to set me up for the year ahead," Dellacqua said after hearing the
good news.
The Aussie is all geared up for the Brisbane International WTA event which will take place on the outdoor hard courts in the first week of January. After this tournament, she got into main draw at the Hobart WTA International
event. Spicing her reward further, Dellacqua got a wild card entry at the Australian Open, first of the four Grand Slam event which will take place in the third and fourth week of January at her home soil.
