Casey Wittenberg eager to win his third tournament of the season - Cox Classic
The only two-time winner on the Web.com Tour this season, Casey Wittenberg, is ready to make it to the PGA Tour for the 2013 golf season with a win at the Cox Classic, scheduled to start from Thursday, August 2, 2012.
He was very close to making his dream come true last week when he finished tied for the third place at the Nationwide Children's Hospital Invitational.
While playing the 17th hole on Sunday, he was tied for the top position on the leaderboard. However, a bogey spoiled his chances of entering the playoffs with Ben Kohles and Luke Guthrie.
Therefore, he still needs to win another event if he wants to move to the upper levels in the world of golf.
Wittenberg can qualify for the PGA Tour if he succeeds in listing his name among the top-25 players in the Web.com Tour money list at the end of the season. Currently, he holds the top spot with $288,083 prize money.
Therefore, he is most likely to get it by the end of 2012. However, he does not prefer this method. In fact, he wants to do it with a more dignified manner – three victories in a single year.
"They call it a battlefield promotion," said Wittenberg, when he participated in the United Leasing Championship at Victoria National Golf Club. "That's the goal. That's why I'm here this week".
However, he missed the cut and tied for the 58th position in the following week at the Utah Championship Presented by Utah Sports Commission.
Yet, he did not lose hope and contended strongly last week and came out as a proud contestant.
"I don't think anybody's out here cheering for me to get that third win, but everybody respects another player's success,” he said. "We've all been on both sides of that ship. When you see somebody succeed multiple times you can appreciate what it took to
get there. It's tough out here".
Wittenberg is not a player who has all of a sudden found a magic trick of recording good scores. In fact, he was a part of the 2003 Walker Cup and was also a low amateur when he participated in the Masters Tournament in 2004.
