Casey Wittenberg finished tied eight at The Players Championship
Casey Wittenberg missed out on a chance of winning The Players Championship, after he faltered for a three-over par 75, in the final round to finish tied for the eighth position on the leaderboard, on Sunday, May 12, 2013.
The US$ 9.5 million tournament was being staged at TPC Sawgrass, featuring some of the best PGA Tour and European Tour players from different parts of the world.
Entering the final round, Wittenberg was sharing the fourth spot on the leaderboard, just one stroke behind a group of three players who were sharing the top position.
He started his final round campaign with bogey on the first hole, followed by a birdie on the very next hole that he played. He then conceded another two bogeys on the fifth and the eighth hole, before adding another birdie to his scorecard on the ninth
hole.
Entering the back nine of the course, he was having a one-over par score. He parred each of the first three holes on the back nine of the course, before suffering three bogeys on each of the next three holes.
A birdie on the 16th hole, followed by pars on the 17th and the 18th hole were not enough to challenge Woods on top of the leaderboard, who recorded his fourth PGA Tour victory of the season by posting a 13-under par tournament score.
Talking to the PGA Tour’s official website, Wittenberg expressed his disappointment in performing poorly on the back nine of the course, which was the major cause behind his failure in the final round.
“I didn't get off to a very good start, unfortunately. I thought the course played fairly difficult today. The pins were hard. You had to hit quality irons and hit the ball close to the hole,” he said. “Unfortunately, Tiger was making birdies, and I really
wasn't moving forward. When I didn't birdie number 11 because I hit a poor drive, that was pretty costly for me. Then I followed that up with bogeys on 13, 14, and 15”.
“All in all, I just didn't play well enough to deserve to be in contention on the back nine, unfortunately,” he added.
