Casey Wittenberg wins Chitimacha Louisiana Open – Golf News
Casey Wittenberg continued his great form in the final round of the Chitimacha Louisiana Open to register an eight-stroke margin victory over Fabian Gomez, Chris Riley and Paul Claxton on Sunday, March 25, 2012.
Wittenberg started his final round with an 18-under par overall score and added another impressive round of a six-under par to finish at 24-under par 260.
He completely outclassed his opponents with the help of consistent performance throughout the tournament.
He carded a total of 22 birdies, two eagles against just two bogeys in the four rounds that he played.
With such an outstanding performance, he set the lowest tournament record at the Le Triomphe Country Club to win $90,000 as prize money.
Also, the eight-stroke margin over his opponents levelled the fourth highest margin victory on the Nationwide Tour.
"It's a great feeling," said Wittenberg, the runner-up in the 2003 U.S. Amateur to Nick Flanagan.
He added, "I've put a lot of hard work into my game. I've probably underachieved to where I thought I might be at this point in my life, but golf's a humbling game. It's a tough sport and you have to cherish these weeks when you play good".
Moreover, his scorecard did not witness any bogey on the final 48 holes he played in the tournament.
"I really putted great the last three days," the 27-year-old former Oklahoma State player said.
Camilo Benedetti and Darron Stiles, both of whom were tied for the second position after the third round, finished the tournament with tie for the fifth place.
They shared a 15-under par 269 score along with three other players, Brad Fritsch, Woody Austin and Rob Oppenheim.
Kent Jones, Andrew Svoboda and Omar Uresti were a further stroke back to tie for the 10th position.
The best round on the final day was recorded by Brad Fritsch, who carded nine-under par 62 on Sunday.
The highlights of his performance include an impressive start with an eagle on the very first hole and four consecutive birdies starting from the par-four fourth hole.
Four birdies further on the back nine took him from being tied at the 45th position to tie for the fifth on the leaderboard.
